Posted October 21, 2017. Same issue. Zaw is dagger type, mods like Primed Fury, pressure point, etc work just fine. Stances and other type-specific mods do not. Stance and mods like Covert Lethality seem to unequip after you leave the menu.

My main melee weapon is a Zaw and cuts through everything effortlessly. Zaws just give you the potential to make something OP that suits your playstyle. Also Rivens can effect more than one weapon which is extra nice if you get a really good one.Zaws mostly depends on preference. As for Nikana Prime, it's well balanced for a short-medium ranged weapon. Crit chance on zaw riven works best if the zaw is built crit heavy but that sacrifices stat chance. based on your riven, if you intend to keep that one, try stats similar to nikana prime.
