Paint definitely needs some touch up. The starter grinds instead of engaging the flywheel about half the time. The ring gear has some wear, but its not awful.Over there a member is testing the latest possible fix installing a new flywheel and a mean green starter. These are the prices and parts I have researched so far. flywheel (part #97378429) $230. flywheel bolts (part #97226126) $2.50 each X 8 = $20. Mean Green Starter (part #MG6600) $399.00.I'm not specifically sure if any of the Broncos had the smaller setup, but the larger setup should be IDENTICAL to the 4r70w bellhousing bolt pattern for the starter, if that helps. Starters for both the 164 and 157 tooth C4s are the same. If you didn't change anything and it started grinding, I'd agree with Steve. First I'd check the bolts, they could just have come loose.If there were shims, and the bolts came loose, the shims (depending on type) could have fallen out.May need reshimming AND bolt tightening.

The grinding is probably from a problem with the starter or the flywheel gear. I suspect you simply can't hear the grinding when using the remote starter. You may have already damaged the flywheel gear which will mean removing the transmission to fix it.
