I believe the converter in my 350 Vortec pickup is about an 1800 stall, and with the 3.73 rear feels very torquey around town. For the Impala, and not being concerned about that last tenth or two at the dragstrip, I'd pick a stall around 2200 rpm for the stock cam and about 2600 for most of the mild aftermarket cams (Comp 304, Crane 227, ZZ3 ....
